Earth Stories Toor Dal | Farmer-Owned, Single-Origin
We grow it. We mill it. We sell it. >
Most dal travels through 5 hands before it reaches yours. This Toor Dal never left ours. Grown in the nutrient-dense black cotton soil of Vidarbha, Maharashtra, our dal is unpolished, laser-cleaned, and carries the earthy, nutty profile that only comes from traditional farming. We grew this crop, we milled it, and we are the owners of this company.
Why is this 12x the market rate? We do not use the mandi (market) price as our reference point because that system was not designed to sustain farming families. Our price reflects the actual cost of integrity:
-
2x the cost of chemical farming: We farm organically, without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. This is slower, more labor-intensive, and produces a lower yield per acre, but it ensures no chemical residues in your food or our soil.
-
Traditional Wet Stone Milling: While industrial steel rollers process a batch in 3 minutes, our stone mills take 4 weeks per batch. This traditional method preserves B vitamins and enzymes that high-speed milling destroys.
Nature does not rush, and neither do we.
This Toor Dal is a limited-source product, grown exclusively on our small family farms in the black cotton soil of Vidarbha. Because we refuse to use chemical accelerators or industrial shortcuts, our production speed is governed by the sun and the stone mill—not a factory schedule.
Why it is rare:
-
Organic Growth Cycles: We avoid synthetic fertilizers that force unnaturally high yields. We grow only what the soil can sustainably give, making our supply 2x more expensive to produce but infinitely cleaner.
-
The 4 Week Mill: While industrial rollers finish a batch in 3 minutes, our traditional wet stone milling takes 4 weeks. This slow speed is a choice; it prevents heat from destroying the dal’s natural B vitamins and enzymes.
-
Hand-Cleaned Integrity: Every grain is inspected by hand, not a high-speed machine. We prioritize human judgment over industrial volume.
The Sensory Experience:
-
Flavor Profile: Nutty, earthy, and slightly sweet.
-
Texture: Unpolished and natural; it holds its shape perfectly after 20 minutes of pressure cooking.
-
Traceability: Every pack can be traced to see the farm, the harvest date, and proof of the farmer's payment.
